The musician David Knopfler supports We Stand With Shaker, and says, “There are few more obvious examples of the breakdown of the rule of law than the incarceration of Shaker Aamer at the American military base in Cuba. He has not been charged or tried, but held in limbo for approaching 14 years. Basic habeas corpus requires he either be tried or released. As yet, release is still proving elusive, even though both President George W. Bush and President Obama have cleared him for release. Most Senators and Congress members know perfectly well that, as a permanent UK resident, Shaker belongs with his wife and four British children in London, but they are too fearful of being kicked off the sponsored gravy train in Washington, to take a principled position and come to his rescue. There is no coherent position that can justify this elementary injustice. Where is their shame? This Alice in Wonderland situation has to be resolved.”
