We Stand with Shaker

  • Film director Ken Loach supports We Stand With Shaker, and says, “Our country and America say that they stand by the rule of law – well, one of the fundamental principles of the rule of law is habeas corpus; in other words, no imprisonment without trial. Well, Shaker Aamer has been in prison for 13 years without trial, without evidence presented against him, without a court being able to assess if he is guilty of anything, and plainly this is a scandal that can’t continue. We all need to stand with Shaker and demand of our government that they abide by the rule of law and free Shaker now.

Shaker should never have been in prison, and it’s intolerable that he is still in prison. And what a condemnation of the American government and the British collusion it is that he is still there – so get him out now.

This is a terrific campaign and a most important campaign, because the false imprisonment of Shaker Aamer is one the great scandals of our time.

The bigger this campaign gets the more the politicians are shamed into recognising the injustice that Shaker has undergone. It should be a demand of every candidate in the election, if he is in prison then; in fact, there’s no harm in making it a demand of the candidates now. You have to build a momentum so that politicians like David Cameron realise that that they have got more to lose by not releasing Shaker than gain. It’s a question of Realpolitik and you have to keep up the pressure.”
