It’s the 800th anniversary this year of the signing of Magna Carta, which introduced habeas corpus to the world (the right not be imprisoned without charge or trial), and in response to the news that the British government is planning a hideous corporate celebration in February 2015, Peter Oborne, the Daily Telegraph’s chief political commentator, and a supporter of We Stand With Shaker (seen here with the giant inflatable figure of Shaker), wrote a powerful column in which he criticised the government for its hypocrisy, providing, as one example, Shaker’s case. He wrote, “Let’s never forget that Shaker Aamer, a British resident with four British children, is still rotting in Guantánamo Bay after being held there for 13 years without charge. Neither David Cameron nor any of his ministers have lifted a serious finger to help him – though this seems not to alarm the ambitious judges or the fat-cat lawyers, let alone the financial PR men and investment bankers [attending the event].”
