US attorney Tom Wilner, who represented the Guantánamo prisoners in their habeas corpus cases before the US Supreme Court in 2004 and 2008, says, “Every anniversary of the opening of Guantánamo marks another birthday for the son Shaker Aamer has never met. Faris Aamer was born on February 14, 2002, shortly after his father was sent to Guantánamo. Faris is now nearly 13 years old. He has never met his father who has been imprisoned all that time, even though he has never been charged with any crime and was cleared for transfer more than seven years ago. How can we do this and call ourselves a just nation? How can we avoid hatred if we treat people this way?”
